The Honan Chapel
A Beautiful Hiberno Romanesque Style Chapel
The Honan Chapel, is a Roman Catholic Church, located just off Donovan Road in Cork City. Since it opened in 1916, it is considered as one of the iconic examples of the Hiberno Romanesque style architecture born of the Celtic Style revival of the 1900’s.
The chapel is located adjacent to the grounds of University College Cork, and was formally referred to as St. Finbarr's Collegiate Chapel or the Honan Hostel Chapel. Although the chapel is dedicated to Cork's patron Finbarr, its name commemorates the chapel's benefactors, the Honan family, who were well known Cork merchants. The intention for the construction of the chapel was that it would be for the scholars and students of Munster.
The Honan Chapel is internationally renowned for its construction, artwork and liturgical collection. In particular, the colourful mosaic floor with its focus on the Christian theme of the "River of Life" which greets you upon entry has attracted much interest over the years due to the fine quality of its craftsmanship.
